Created by Royal Australian Mint designer Horst Hahne, the first $2 was Australia’s third currency issue to recognise Australia’s indigenous heritage. Depicting an aboriginal elder beneath the Southern Cross, this groundbreaking type was struck by the Royal Australian Mint in 1988 – the year that marked the 200th anniversary of European settlement of Australia.
