Honouring 30 Years of the Torres Strait Islander Flag
2025 marks the thirtieth anniversary of the Torres Strait Islander Flag being officially proclaimed as a flag of Australia — a proud symbol of identity, unity, and cultural strength.
Originally designed in 1992 by the late Bernard Namok, the flag holds deep cultural and historical significance for Torres Strait Islander peoples. Its colours tell a story: green for the land, blue for the sea, and black for the people. At its heart, the traditional Dhari headdress and five-pointed star proudly represent cultural heritage and the island groups of the Torres Strait.
Since its official recognition in 1995, the flag has become an enduring symbol of pride, resilience, and belonging.
To commemorate this important milestone, the Royal Australian Mint is proud to release the 2025 $2 C Mintmark Coloured Uncirculated Coin. This special release celebrates the enduring legacy of the flag and pays tribute to the rich history, traditions, and contributions of Torres Strait Islander communities across Australia.
