To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Australian Aboriginal Flag, a symbol deeply intertwined with the identity, unity, and pride of contemporary Aboriginal Australians, the Royal Australian Mint has issued a special coin. The reverse design pays homage to Harold Thomas’ iconic creation, representing the flag’s distinctive elements.

On the coin, the design unfolds with a black semi-circle above, symbolizing the night sky, and a red semi-circle below, reminiscent of Australia’s rich red earth. Overlaid on this powerful imagery is a pattern of miniature Aboriginal flags, serving as a tribute to the diversity within the Aboriginal communities. This unmarked space represents the central sun motif, a key element in the flag’s symbolism.
