2011 $5 Uncirculated Remembrance Day 11.11.11 Red Poppy Coin Mintage 20,284
"In Flanders fields the Poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row"
So began the poem by Canadian Lieutenant-Colonel John McRae for his fallen comrades in 1915, which enlisted the red Flanders poppy as a symbol of remembrance, sacrifice and the promise of renewal at war's end. Australians wear the poppy to remember the lost and continue their legacy.
Remembrance is observed through one minute's silence at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, in honour of those who have died or been wounded in war.
2011 was a unique year for Remembrance Day - the sequence of numbers 11.11.11 will not be seen again for another century.
The commemorative $5 Uncirculated coin released by the RAM for Remembrance Day features a red poppy prominently on the reverse.
