This hammered silver penny was struck during the reign of King James I (1603–1625), the first Stuart monarch to rule England following the death of Queen Elizabeth I. James also became the first king to unite the crowns of England and Scotland, marking the beginning of the Stuart dynasty and a significant turning point in British history.
Minted between 1604 and 1619, this silver penny formed part of James I's early hammered coinage and circulated throughout England during a period of political change, overseas exploration, and the establishment of the first permanent English settlements in North America. The obverse features the crowned portrait of James I with his Latin royal titles, while the reverse displays the traditional long cross dividing the royal shield, a design that had been used on English pennies for centuries to help deter clipping of the coin's precious silver edges.
