Design Details
Designed by Royal Australian Mint artist Aaron Baggio, the reverse captures the diverse roles performed by women during the war effort, from communications and administration to technical and operational support positions.
At the centre of the design is a telegraph key, from which three lines of Morse code radiate outward. These coded messages represent the acronyms of the three women's services established in 1941: WAAAF, AWAS, and WRANS.
The selective colour application draws inspiration from the distinctive uniform colours of the Women's Auxiliary Australian Air Force (WAAAF), the first and largest of Australia's wartime women's services.
Historical Significance
Beginning with the formation of the WAAAF in March 1941, Australian women stepped into roles that became essential to the nation's wartime operations. Thousands served as telegraphists, mechanics, clerks, radar operators, drivers, and in many other specialist positions that supported Australia's defence efforts.
The WRANS followed in April 1941, with the AWAS established later that year. Collectively, these organisations enabled women to make a lasting contribution to Australia's military capability during the Second World War. Their legacy continues today through the full integration of women across all branches of the Australian Defence Force.
