Issued during the reign of Henry VII, founder of the Tudor dynasty, this hammered silver penny was struck at the Durham Mint under the authority of the Bishop of Durham. Unlike the Royal Mint in London, Durham held the rare privilege of producing its own coinage as a palatinate. The coin features a crowned bust of Henry VII with the reverse displaying a long cross and ecclesiastical mint marks identifying Durham. Coins from the Durham Mint are scarcer than London issues and are especially desirable among collectors of Tudor and ecclesiastical coinage.
