This hammered silver penny was struck during the reign of King Edward I, one of England's most influential medieval monarchs. It belongs to the famous Long Cross coinage introduced in 1279, where the reverse features a cross extending to the edge of the coin. This design helped prevent clipping, a common medieval practice where silver was shaved from coin edges. The obverse bears a crowned portrait of Edward I with the inscription EDW R ANGL DNS HYB, while the reverse names the mint and moneyer. Long Cross pennies are among the most iconic English medieval coins and are highly sought after by collectors due to their historical importance and distinctive Gothic design.
