The Three-Cent Nickel was introduced in 1865 and was created to replace the unpopular silver three-cent coin, which had largely disappeared from circulation during the American Civil War. Composed of copper-nickel, the coin features Liberty on the obverse and the Roman numeral III within a wreath on the reverse. Although only minted until 1889, it represents one of the most unusual denominations in United States numismatic history and remains a favourite among collectors of obsolete American coinage.
