This hammered silver penny was issued during the early years of Queen Elizabeth I's reign and belongs to the Third and Fourth Issues of her famous coinage. These coins were produced shortly after Elizabeth's Great Recoinage of 1560–1561, which restored England's currency following the severe debasement under Henry VIII and Edward VI.
The obverse features the crowned bust of Elizabeth I with her royal titles, while the reverse carries the long cross and royal shield, continuing a design tradition dating back centuries. Hammered pennies of Elizabeth I circulated widely throughout England during the height of the Tudor period and remain popular with collectors due to their connection with one of Britain's most influential monarchs. Each example is individually hand struck, giving every coin its own distinctive character.
