WOMEN'S SERVICES
The Women's Auxiliary Australian Air Force (WAAAF) was formed in March 1941 after lobbying by women keen to serve, and by the Chief of the Air Staff who wanted to release male personnel for service overseas. Then came the Women's Royal Australian Naval Service (WRANS) in April, and the Australian Women's Army Service (AWAS) in August.
Over 50,000 women enlisted in these services during the Second World War, and they worked in a wide range of roles
- among them drivers, mechanics, cooks, stewards, typists and telegraphists.
Separate services for women were disbanded during the 1980s, and all roles were gradually opened to women.
